Grand Western Canal Trust, now Friends of the Grand Western Canal, members enjoy the waterway in many ways and our mission
is to help all users to get maximum enjoyment from this wonderful resource.
We are as interested in the conservation of the historic structures in Somerset as
we are in the active boating and wildlife conservation in Devon and we represent
all facets of the canal at a range of local and national events.
If you enjoy getting your hands dirty in a good cause then why not come along to
our regular working parties at Nynehead and help interpret the best preserved remains
of one of the world’s first boat lifts? Usually the second Saturday of each month
but please check via the ‘contact’ form.
We also run occasional working parties at other sites and generally host at least
one Waterways Recovery Group working party each year where you can join other canal
enthusiasts for a sweaty week in Devon’s glorious countryside. Details of forthcoming
events are on the ‘for your diary’ page.
Friends members receive regular newsletters to keep them up to date with what’s going
on. Skittles’ evenings in The Globe (a public house having long association with
‘our canal) have become an enjoyable part of our members’ social lives.
These are some of the many reasons for joining the new Friends as well as the obvious one
that all members want to see the Grand Western enhanced and well supported.
